The yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, known for its nutritional properties, is used to produce Chrom Lalmin®. The yeast is grown under controlled conditions on a nutrient medium rich in sugars, minerals and other nutrients. During cultivation, chromium is added to the culture medium in a form that is readily absorbed by the yeast. The yeast absorbs this chromium and incorporates it into its cellular structure. This process is called "biofortification".

The yeast continues to grow and ferment, during which time it is further enriched with chromium. Fermentation takes place under controlled temperatures and other conditions that favor optimal growth and enrichment. After the fermentation process is complete, the yeast is harvested, which involves separating the yeast from the culture medium. The collected yeast is dried to obtain a stable product with a long shelf life. The chromium-enriched dry yeast is further processed into the required form, for example into a powder that is used to fill the looms. The chromium contained in Lalmin® is bioavailable, which may be beneficial for those who prefer this source of selenium. Lalmin® chrome is also suitable for vegans.
